There is a lot to love about this show; the cast are strong, and the onstage band who interact in the main diner setting is a fun touch.

Ever Since the Dawn of Anne | Anne EdmondsEssendon girl Anne Edmonds has gotten into a lot of trouble in her 32 years. With the help of accompanist Amy Bennett, she shares her smoking/drinking/pining for unavailable boys stories in song and chatter. There’s something both endearing and precocious about her blatant awkwardness and penchant for self-embarrassment. Maybe it’s her single dance move – a mechanical hip-thrusting action or maybe it’s her slightly offbeat take on life’s familiar challenges or maybe it’s just her amusing songs that vary in vocal quality but are consistently entertaining.

While not all of the material is magic, there’s enough to like in this show which runs a neat 50 minutes and doesn’t wear out its welcome. It’s topics are pretty familiar – alcohol-induced declarations of love, teenage insecurities, primary school friendships and being a surly waitress at the Pancake Parlour. Edmonds plays the geeky, uncool factor to her advantage and gets us on onside even when some jokes fall slightly flat.

There are some more outrageous tales too - if we are to believe her. Apparently a foray into smoking at age 8 managed to burn down a park. Ever Since the Dawn of Anne might not start any fires, but it definitely has a smile-inducing warm glow about it.
